Pre-Viewing Questions

1. Is there a difference between hearing and listening? Prepare a mind map which contains these two main terms and fill it with as many ideas as you can come up with in 5 minutes.

2. Imagine a typical communicative situation from your daily life. Which role does listening play in it? Could you handle this situation if someone or something prevented you from listening?

3. Which problems could young learners have while listening to an English text? Create a list of at least 5 difficulties.

 

Post-Viewing Questions

1. Prepare a table which contains the information provided in the video about the “top-down”, the “bottom-up”, and the “interactive” process. What do the names of these processes mean? What do they tell you about their approach to listening?

2. How can you activate the “general world knowledge” of your students? Try to find 3 different introductory activities to prepare a listening task.

3. How can you make sure that students listen in order to get the gist of what they hear and don’t try to understand every single word? Which preparatory steps are necessary?
